Hi! My name is Steven Visser and I love working in the event industry.

My Story - The Path that Led to the Founding of Waveright Media

Like many young people, I rejected the idea that I needed to go to school to get a job.

Instead, I had grandiose ambitions of becoming a famous musician one day.

That didn't pan out and in retrospect, I realized the touring lifestyle wasn't for me.

So, I conceded a little, and decided I would go to school; but not for a "real" job.

I still wanted to be involved in the music scene; so, I was going to become an audio engineer.

Little did I know - that one decision would change my life forever.

I loved it.

Never before had I found it so easy and rewarding to spend all my time learning.

There was only one problem: the money sucked.

You were lucky if you could even volunteer as a coffee runner in a studio - so that was out.

And live events weren't much better - or so I thought.

I started doing sound at local venues, which was trial by fire.

Even with a year of training, there's really no replacement for experience.

Not to mention some of the hilarious and egregious working conditions I encountered.

From moldy storage rooms to wall-mounted mixing consoles in mop closets - I saw it all.

Eventually, I became the in-house technician at Cafe Deux Soleils.

It was a fun, dynamic job in a legendary venue with a tight-knit crew and I'll never forget it.

But even though the work was more reliable than ever, the pay still wasn't enough for me.

That's when I stumbled across the wonderful world of Corporate AV.

While it's not for everyone, I had finally found the perfect balance between passion and pay.

I was doing something I loved and making more money than I'd ever made in my life.

To this day, it still feels like the biggest life hack ever.

Fast forward 11 years and I am a well-known freelance technician in Vancouver.

I know a lot more than just audio too - lighting, video, rigging, power, you name it.

I am one of the heads of both the audio and video departments at Rogers Arena.

And in 2023, I started my own company: Waveright Media.

I've worked incredibly hard and spent more time than most people dedicated to this industry.

That's why I want to provide the best service possible - because I know what is possible.

I want to provide value not only for clients but for fellow event professionals as well.

That's why I'm starting this blog - to help event planners and AV techs succeed.

And that's why I started a free Skool community where people can learn AV Skills.

I can't wait to see what the future has in store for our company and our industry.

I feel incredibly lucky to be a part of it and this is just the beginning.
