How to Start a Career as a Touring Tech

touring audio technician

While responding to a great post by my friend, @Mark Hunt, I realized it would be really useful to talk about how to start a career as a touring tech for those who are interested in that path.

If you live in Vancouver, there’s a few production companies that have touring opportunities: Promosa, Christie Lites, Kian Sound, and if anyone can think of others please add them in a comment below.

You can also work for Riggit at Rogers arena and/or IATSE local 118 at BC Place and other local venues to build experience without having to travel (118 is also great if you want to get into theatre).

But if you’re looking for other American/International companies, there’s PRG, Claire, and Fuse.

You can also look up your local IATSE union that represents stagehands or film if you want to go that route and apply to them.

Another way to get into touring is to sign up for Bobnet job posts: https://www.bobnet.rocks

It is a paid service but it’s a small one time fee.

If you’re new to touring you need to sign up for “young guns” first.

Then, after you have 3 years of experience on the road, you can sign up for the “pro list” and have access to job posts for large touring acts.

If anyone has any other advice, please comment below!
