What Does an Audiovisual Company Actually Do?

A group of technicians working on a corporate event

Most people don't actually know what an audiovisual company does.

Not in detail, anyway — and there's no real reason they should. It's not their job to know.

AV is a short way of saying "audio and visuals," but a real AV company does a lot more than that.

Here's a simple breakdown of the 5 main things an AV company handles.

  1. AUDIO

Audio means anything to do with sound.

A proper audio setup includes:

  • microphones, so people can be heard clearly.

  • speakers, so everyone in the room can hear.

  • a mixer, which is like a control panel that blends all the different sounds together.

If any of this is off, you get problems like:

  • feedback - that awful screeching noise.

  • spots in the room where you can't hear well.

  • a speaker nobody can hear in the back row.

  1. VIDEO

Video can mean recordings, streams, or anything the audience sees on a screen.

That includes:

  • projectors and screens.

  • LED video walls.

  • cameras, for filming or streaming the event.

  • switchers, which let you flip between camera angles, slides, and videos while the event is happening.

  1. LIGHTING

Lighting isn't just about being able to see.

It also helps set the mood.

Lighting can:

  • help the audience see the stage clearly.

  • make the room feel a certain way, like exciting or calm.

  • make sure the event looks good if it's being filmed.

  1. POWER

This is the one people forget about most, and it's a big deal.

Every microphone, projector, and light needs power to work.

Most buildings weren't built to handle that much electricity at once.

A good AV company figures out exactly how much power everything needs ahead of time, so nothing shuts off in the middle of the event.

  1. RIGGING

Rigging means anything that gets hung up high — like speakers, lights, or screens.

This is one of the most important parts of the job, because if something isn't hung up safely, it could fall.

A good AV company plans exactly how much weight things can hold before anything goes up.

WHY ALL FIVE MATTER TOGETHER

These five parts work best as a team.

If one part is missing or weak, people will feel like the whole event was lower quality.

Power is what everything else needs to work — but on its own, power doesn't do anything.

Sound is important, but without lighting, you might not be able to see who's talking.

Video helps people see slides and branding, but without good lighting, the screen can be hard to read.

Lighting sets the mood, but without sound, there's no way to actually tell the story.

That's the real answer to "what does an AV company actually do?".

It's not just one thing.

It's making sure sound, video, lighting, power, and rigging all work together smoothly.
